The Hopeful Journey
How Christian Eschatology Answers Our Deepest Questions
Introduction
In a world filled with uncertainties, existential questions about the meaning of life, the presence of evil, and the reality of suffering often leave many searching for answers. However, Christians who possess a deep understanding of eschatology find solace in the hope it provides for the future, comfort in the present, and motivation for missions. This article explores the profound impact of Christian eschatology on believers, drawing inspiration from biblical references that ignite thought-provoking reflections, inspire, and captivate the reader.
1. Hope for the Future: Christian eschatology offers a unique perspective on the future, providing believers with a genuine sense of hope. The promise of a renewed creation, where death, injustice, sorrow, and pain are no more, gives true meaning to love in the face of mortality. As 1 Corinthians 15:54-55 states, “When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’” This assurance allows Christians to face life’s challenges with unwavering hope.
As C.S. Lewis eloquently put it, “The Christian says, ‘Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”
2. Comfort in the Present: Living in a fallen world, plagued by pain, suffering, and rampant evil, can be disheartening. However, Christian eschatology brings comfort by reminding believers that their present tribulations are temporary. Romans 8:18 affirms this truth, stating, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” Knowing that a glorious future awaits them, Christians can find solace in their present circumstances, knowing that their struggles have an expiration date.
As John Piper said, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” When we find our satisfaction in God alone, we can endure any hardship with joy and peace.
3. Motivation for Missions: Christian eschatology also fuels the passion and motivation for missions. The Great Commission, as outlined in Matthew 28:19-20, commands believers to go and make disciples of all nations. With the knowledge that time is limited and the return of Christ is imminent, Christians are driven to relentlessly pursue this mission with great love, understanding, and joy. The hope of Christ’s imminent return compels believers to share the message of salvation, bringing hope to a world in desperate need.
As N.T. Wright observed, “Our task in the present…is to live as resurrection people in between Easter and the final day, with our Christian life, corporate and individual, in both worship and mission, as a sign of the first and a foretaste of the second.” When we live as resurrection people, we demonstrate the power and beauty of God’s kingdom to a broken world.
Conclusion: Christian eschatology offers believers a profound understanding of the future, providing hope, comfort, and motivation. The promise of a renewed creation, free from suffering and evil, gives true meaning to love, justice, joy and peace. As Christians navigate the challenges of the present, they find solace in the knowledge that their struggles are temporary and that a glorious future awaits. This understanding also ignites a passion for missions, as believers relentlessly pursue the Great Commission, sharing the hope of salvation with a world in need. Let us embrace the teachings of Christian eschatology, for it holds the key to a hopeful journey through life’s existential questions.
